Chapter 29

Grayhawk is going over their next mission when Cassie, Darius, Armand, and Timmet arrive together. Gunny is visibly concerned. Armand signals bad news to give her a warning of what to expect. She motions them to sit, tucking away the file she's working on.

"What's screwed up?" She's calm and collected. She has exceptional staff. They can fix whatever crisis is occurring now.

Timmet explains the situation, double duty, and admits his ordered interaction for Scarlet. He hands Grayhawk a breakdown of Sgt. Graves' time since she has been a member of Javelin's crew. "With the exceptions of her forced light duty and recent leave on your home worlds, she's only had time to sleep twice. The computer shows her using her stasis bed once other than when she was injured."

"I can tell you she didn't regen long during our last port. She was otherwise occupied." Darius adds ruefully. "I didn't know about the double rotations. I've had her helping with the wobbly program too." Those blocks of time are accounted for on Timmet's breakdown.

Grayhawk is outwardly calm. Only their lifetime of familiarity allows Armand to see how angry she is. "How did Sgt. Graves end up on duty so much?"

Timmet shakes his head. "I don't know. Elias is checking into it. He found a glitch in the scheduling program. It was counting her as two separate people with different MOSs. One as night shift security. The other a day Engineering tech."

Grayhawk turns her attention to the people who have gotten closest to Scarlet. "Would she believe this was an honest mistake?"

Cassie grimaces. "Not likely. She knows Timmet and Elias are friends. She probably viewed it as Gunny's way of further punishing her. Your best bet is to ensure it doesn't happen again. She never mentioned it to us when we played poker. She was ensuring no one would accuse her of using her officer friends for favors." The last is directed at Timmet snidely.

Timmet knows he deserves the shade Cassie is throwing. "I'll keep a personal eye on it myself. Elias too. He wants her back."

"She has a different opinion on that matter or, so I'm led to believe," Grayhawk responds sharply, crossing her arms over her chest.

Armand concurs. "She's still pretty pissed at Elias. Give her a couple of more ground ops to work off her frustration, and she will go back without much of a fight. Right now, her pride's still bruised."

Grayhawk is silent for a while, staring at the info from Gunny. Her eyes keep flickering to the file she was working on when they arrived. "You've put me in an awkward position. We'll need her combat experience on our next op. She's to have the next two days completely off. I don't care what it takes to get her off shift. Cover them yourselves if you have to. She'll spend twelve hours of that time in stasis. Nonnegotiable. And she'll no longer spend her free time helping with the Warrant Officer program. Are we clear?"

She gets a chorus of "Yes, Ma'am.
